Per-county background on well drilling cost, septic feasibility, water quality risk, and geology for rural property in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Each guide is built from the same data layer that powers a Rural Prospector report — the MN DNR County Well Index, WI DNR Bureau of Drinking Water and Groundwater, NRCS gSSURGO soil survey, and the WI DNR PFAS Study.

Minnesota
- Itasca County, MNNorth-central MN cabin and lake country anchored by Grand Rapids. 100+ wells/sq-mi in most rural townships; glacial-till + bedrock geology; scattered arsenic risk.
- Lake of the Woods County, MNFar-northern MN border country. Glaciolacustrine clay considerations from Lake Agassiz deposits; low ag pressure; limited per-well data density.
- Hubbard County, MNPark Rapids cabin country. Sandy outwash favors conventional septic; productive shallow aquifers keep drilling cost low for most parcels.
- Crow Wing County, MNBrainerd Lakes — Minnesota's premier 2nd-home market. Mixed Brainerd-lobe glacial deposits; aggressive shoreland zoning shapes septic recommendations.
- Cass County, MNLeech Lake and Chippewa National Forest. North-woods hunting and cabin country; moderate well-log density; mixed glacial deposits.
- Otter Tail County, MN1,000+ named lakes plus active agricultural land. Sandy outwash is common; nitrate risk higher than in pure cabin counties.
Wisconsin
- Vilas County, WIEagle River and the Northwoods. Granite bedrock under sandy outwash; thin per-well PFAS data flagged honestly.
- Sawyer County, WIHayward and the Chippewa Flowage. Sandy-outwash geology; mound systems common on lakeshore; PFAS sample density thin.
- Oneida County, WIRhinelander and Minocqua. Northwoods cabin economy with a real PFAS context: Rhinelander municipal water has documented detections, sample density rural is still thin.
- Bayfield County, WIApostle Islands and the Lake Superior shore. Cambrian sandstone bedrock changes the drilling and septic story vs. the rest of Northwoods WI.
